More than 70 representatives from international organizations, government departments, agricultural research institutes, key universities, and enterprises participated in this side meeting. Sun Tan, vice president of the CAAS and party member, and Nick Miles, vice president of the University of Nottingham, UK, attended the meeting and delivered speeches. The meeting was chaired by Nie Fengying, executive deputy director of Agriculture Information Institute and deputy director of the Center for International Agricultural Research of the CAAS.
Sun Tan pointed out that since the founding of the People's Republic of China 70 years ago, the Chinese government has taken powerful measures to eliminate poverty, accumulated rich experience and made remarkable achievements. It is the solemn commitment of the Chinese government to lift the rural poor out of poverty under current standards by 2020, remove all poverty-stricken counties, and solve the overall regional poverty problem. Through external support and stimulating endogenous motivation, rural revitalization can provide a more stable development foundation and development opportunities for the poor, and provide policy and resource guarantees to consolidate the effectiveness of poverty alleviation. Therefore, organically linking the fight against poverty with the implementation of the rural revitalization strategy will undoubtedly provide a new opportunity for a decisive victory in the fight against poverty and the elimination of poverty. He pointed out that the CAAS will launch the "International Agricultural Science Program" to promote the comprehensive integration of scientists from various countries into the global innovation network and enhance the level of scientific and technological innovation. The CAAS is willing to work with the University of Nottingham to strengthen exchanges of scientific and technological talents, deepen cooperation and interaction, and work together to advance hand in hand.
Nick Miles pointed out that since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, China has made world-renowned achievements in poverty alleviation and development, making significant contributions to the realization of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and global poverty reduction. In recent years, the rural revitalization strategy proposed by the Chinese government has prioritized the development of agriculture and rural areas, providing a strong guarantee for the economic transformation and industrial upgrading of poor areas and for the poor to get rid of poverty and become rich. He pointed out that he was very happy to be invited to visit and was willing to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences to improve the level of scientific and technological innovation.
At the meeting, the Center for International Agricultural Research of the CAAS signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of Nottingham and the Sichuan Academy of Agricultural Sciences respectively.
