Expert from World Bank visited the Agricultural Information Institute and gave a speech on global poverty monitoring
On June 14th 2016, Ms. Chen Shaohua, Senior Statistician from the Development and Economic Research Department of the World Bank, was invited to visit the Agricultural Information Institute (AII) of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and the Researcher Nie Fengying, Director of the International Information Research Office and Deputy Director of the Center for International Agricultural Research (CIAR), had in-depth communication with Ms. Chen Shaohua on the main work of CIAR and issues related to farmer surveys in poverty research. Ms. Chen Shaohua subsequently gave an academic presentation titled "China's National Poverty Line and International Poverty Line". More than 30 researchers and graduate students from relevant departments of the Agricultural Information Institute and the Institute of Agricultural Economics and Development attended the meeting. Director Nie Fengying introduced the research results of the International Infoemation Office in the fields of food security and poverty, and shared her experience in scientific sampling, questionnaire quality control and field investigations from multiple rounds of household surveys in impoverished areas. Ms. Chen Shaohua introduced the experience and tools of the World Bank in poverty monitoring and expressed willingness to strengthen communication and cooperation with AII, especially in the training of personnel for farmer surveys and data mining. She also made specific suggestions for the farmer survey questionnaire of the International Information Office. At the report meeting, Ms. Chen Shaohua introduced the work of the World Bank in global poverty monitoring from several aspects, including the global poverty line, purchasing power parity (PPP) indicators, China's poverty line and poverty and shared development. In terms of data and methods, Ms. Chen Shaohua raised issues related to poverty monitoring from the history of the World Bank's global poverty monitoring, and emphasized how to determine the poverty line, specific PPP accounting issues, and measurement choices for income and consumption. Subsequently, Ms. Chen Shaohua had interactive exchanges with the attendees and encouraged young researchers and graduate students to actively apply to the World Bank for project research and holiday internships.
This academic exchange has strengthened the understanding of researchers and graduate students in agricultural economics and management towards the global poverty monitoring research and work of the World Bank, which would help to enhance further communication and understanding between the World Bank, AII and CIAR.
