CAASTIA Facilitates China–Kenya Agricultural Research Collaboration on Livestock Value Chains
A virtual meeting on August 28, 2025, deepened agricultural research cooperation between China and Kenya under the China–Africa Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Alliance (CAASTIA). The session united experts from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), chaired by Dr. Jieying Bi, Director of the General Office at CAAS's Center for International Agricultural Research (CIAR).
Dr. Erick Mungube, Assistant Director of KALRO, delivered opening remarks, emphasizing the strategic importance of international collaboration in advancing Kenya’s agricultural transformation. The meeting advanced joint efforts in dairy and poultry value chains, vital to Kenya's food security and rural development. Dr. Monicah Maichomo, Institute Director, highlighted the importance of science and technology innovation in improving livestock productivity, disease control, and support for smallholder farmers, particularly women-led enterprises.
Discussions covered collaborative research on key animal diseases—including Foot-and-Mouth Disease, Newcastle Disease, and African Swine Fever—and strategies for grassland-based systems. A CAAS delegation plans a field visit to Kenya to engage stakeholders and refine joint research initiatives. Both sides also explored funding opportunities from multilateral and bilateral channels.
Progress was made on a Memorandum of Understanding between CAAS's Lanzhou Veterinary Research Institute and KALRO's VSRI, focusing on disease monitoring, training, and co-developing international projects. Both sides also prepared for the upcoming CAASTIA General Assembly in October 2025 in Addis Ababa, where Kenya will showcase its partnership achievements.
The meeting reinforced a shared vision for sustainable livestock development through institutional collaboration, capacity building, and innovation.
